Des Moines began as a military post in the 1800’s, founded on the Des Moines River, and has developed into a friendly, affordable vacation destination. To explore the natural beauty of Iowa, try hiking or biking some of the Des Moines River Water Trail’s 100 miles. The Botanical and Environmental Center is the place for exciting events such as the Annual Fall Bulb Mart and visits with Santa at Christmas. Self-guided tours are available of the dome and collection of bonsai. Just south of the Botanical Center and across the Iowa River from the Events Center you can explore a 1.7 acre Asian Garden filled with waterfalls, stone pagodas and a pavilion. Bring your cameras!
